Mentor a Refugee Family or Refugee Youth!

COAR is currently recruiting volunteers for two of its programs:

1) The Reaching Higher Program is a college prep program that works with local refugee high school students to provide them with guidance, resources, and encouragement towards their pursuit of higher education. Mentors are current college or university students who work one-on-one with a refugee high school students through a combination of six Saturday morning workshops in addition to intensive, individualized mentorship. Being a mentor is a great leadership experience and an excellent opportunity to form a deep personal connection with a refugee high school student. The Reaching Higher Program will be accepting applications until September 21th, 2007 for the 2007-2008 academic year. Applications may be accessed and completed online at http://www.coarweb.org/.

Feel free to direct questions and concerns to Sara Schwalm at reachinghigher@coarweb.org.

2) The Volunteer Anchor Program seeks to match up pairs of volunteers with locally resettled refugee families. The volunteers serve as a critical social support by helping refugee families adapt to life in America. Typically, volunteers will practice English with the whole family, help with homework, introduce and explain American cultural norms, and help solve the daily difficulties families might face. Volunteer will meet with the families once a week at a time mutually agreed upon by both the volunteers and family. The Volunteer Anchor Program will be accepting applications until September 21st, 2007 for the 2007-2008 academic year. Applications may be accessed and completed online at http://www.coarweb.org/

Feel free to direct questions and concerns to Vidula Patki at vap@coarweb.org.
