Alanna Duong

Reaching Higher Outreach and Events Coordinator

Alanna is a senior studying Economics. She joined COAR in the hopes of aiding driven students to achieve their goal of pursuing higher education. As refugees, these students might not have the support-base at home, at school or from their peers as others do; however, Alanna believes that COAR has the ability to be that support-base and wants to do all she can to help COAR help the students.  

Alisyn McElvain

Awareness and Advocacy

Alisyn is a senior at ASU majoring in Linguistics and Spanish with a minor in Public Relations. With her passions for language, culture, and interacting with people, COAR was a perfect match for her volunteer interests. She is currently reaching out to the community with Awareness & Advocacy and absolutely loves working for COAR's cause.

Anna Bethancourt

Volunter Anchor Program Coordinator

Anna Bethancourt is a junior honors student majoring in English Literature with a minor in Spanish.  She was born and raised in Tempe, and has been involved with COAR for both of her years at ASU.  She loves to travel, and have made five trips to Latin America, visiting Mexico, Costa Rica, and Peru.  She hopes to work as an aid worker in Palestine at some point after graduation in addition to returning to Lima, Peru to work with local literacy efforts. 

Anne Marie Norgren

Reaching Higher Workshop Coordinator

Anne Marie is a senior at ASU studying Mathematics and Nonprofit
Leadership and Management. She has a passion for providing educational
opportunities for at-risk children as well as development
opportunities for low-income communities, and this has brought her to
study and do development work throughout Latin America. Anne Marie has
spent a significant amount of time in Mexico, Guatemala, and Chile,
and she loves working with people from countries around the world. She
believes that every individual has something incredible to offer, and
she strives to help people realize their potential. After serving as a
volunteer anchor during her freshman year, Anne Marie is excited to be
a part of COAR again!

Christoph Weber

VAP Resources Coordinator

Christoph Weber is a senior studying psychology, political science, and Chinese. His interests include hiking, skiing, mountains, new foods, and cultural exchange.  After a year and a half away from ASU to help on the Obama primary campaign and then study/work in China, he returned to Tempe to finish his honors thesis on ethnic relations in Western China and joined the VAP program.  After graduation, Christoph will work as a wildland firefighter in Nevada.

Kar Yee Aw

Reaching Higher Scholar Coordinator

Kar Yee is a senior majoring in Biology and Society at ASU. She is originally from Malaysia and moved to the United States during her sophomore year in high school. She started as a VAP volunteer for COAR and decided to join the leadership team in order to become more involved with the program. She loves working with refugee families and helping them to adjust into their new lives. After she graduates, she plasn to get a Masters degree in Public Health focusing on international health and to work with health issues conflicting developing and third world countries.

Patricia Neideigh-Young

VAP Program Workshop Coordinator

Patricia is a graduate student in psychology at the University of Phoenix. She is also a Spanish instructor and English Language Learner Coordinator at East Valley High School in Mesa.  Her interest in anything international began at a very young age when her parents adopted her brother who was one of the children from Operation Babylift at the end of Vietnam.

She studied in Spain as a Rotary Exchange Student in Alcoy, Alicante and at the Universidad de Salamanca.  As an undergraduate student, she completed a BA in Spanish and a BA in International Studies specializing in human rights and refugees. Since that time, she has worked both at home and abroad as a linguistic and cultural liaison to a variety of communities wherever she has lived. In her spare time, she loves to travel, practice organic cooking, spend time with her family and check out local music and performing arts.  She loves COAR because of the shared humanity that exists between the refugee families and the volunteers while cultural exchange is taking place.

Rema-Therese Beydoun

Program Director

Rema-Therese Beydoun graduated from the Barrett Honors College at Arizona State University (ASU) in December 2008, with a Bachelor of Arts in History.  In fall 2009, she will begin her Master’s at ASU, where she will study Social Justice and Human Rights.  She became interested in human rights during her sophomore year in college, prompting her to join COAR as a volunteer.  Rema went on to work on democracy and human rights issues at the U.S. Department of State after graduating from ASU.  In the future, she hopes to focus her work on human rights, democracy and rule of law in developing countries, particularly in the Middle East.  Rema looks forward to serving the refugee community of Arizona.   

Sarina Garibovic

Reaching Higher Mentor Coordinator

Sarina is a junior at Arizona State University majoring in Political Science and Philosophy. She was born in Pula, Croatia and moved from a small town in Austria to Phoenix in 1996. She hopes to further her education by studying Law. In her free time Sarina loves to read, paint and ride her bike.

Stefani Baca

Reaching Higher Elementary Mentor Coordinator

Stefani Baca is a senior at Arizona State University.  She is majoring in psychology and minoring in justice studies where she works as a research assistant in a few social science based studies.  After finishing her undergrad at ASU, she is planning on attending NYU to study global affairs with a focus on humanitarian aid and human rights.  She is looking forward to a career which allows her to help people who suffer from human rights violations. 

Stephen Jurca

Finance Director

Stephen is a senior at Arizona State University studying accounting and economics. He joined COAR in August 2009 to help support an organization with mission he believes in: helping refugees. He hopes to study international humanitarian law after graduation.

Other than working with numbers and refugees, Stephens interests include hockey, cooking and being outdoors. The California native is considering many international career options after he completes his studies.

 

 

Videlinata Istina Krishna

Reaching Higher Mentor Coordinator
Originally from the Republic of Congo, Krishna came to the United States in 2004 after spending 4 years in Cote d'Ivoire. She spent three years studying at Glendale Community College, receiving an Associates degree in Arts. She is starting her first year at ASU in 2008 and plans to study philosophy.
